When the Ponca Indians were forced from their land north of Neligh in the late 1800’s, an 18-month-old infant tragically died four days into the march. The father, grief stricken that he could not have a proper burial for his child asked the people of Neligh to bury and care for his daughter as one of their own. Since 1877, the people of Neligh have been caring for the grave of White Buffalo Girl. They erected a headstone and each year decorate the grave with flowers. In 2011, the Ponca Tribe from Oklahoma gave thanks to the people of Neligh for all they had done to ease the mind of this grieving father by cooking a traditional Native American supper. They gave gifts to the oldest residents of Neligh. Click here to hear the NET story.
